Listen to the Reed
For this one i decided to visualize a verse from Rumi, in Farsi.
Luckily it is possible to use opentype.js for Arabic/Farsi/Urdu text, as of last month. They suggested using
Scheherazade-Bold.ttf as a “supported” font. But that didn’t really work.
I asked Allison for help and evidently the Arabic version of the default NotoSans,
NotoSansArabic-Regular.ttf works just fine!
But oh my god opentype is difficult to work with! I didn’t even get to the good parts to play around, meaning the vertices and the curves.
Song of Reed, Translated by Jonathan Star
Listen to the song of the reed, How it wails with the pain of separation:
“Ever since I was taken from my reed bed My woeful song has caused men and women to weep.
I seek out those whose hearts are torn by separation For only they understand the pain of this longing.
Whoever is taken away from his homeland Yearns for the day he will return.
